Children care unless taught otherwise!
Years ago I worked in a therapeutic foster care program. My role was to provide therapy for kids and teens in their foster homes as well as counsel the foster parent(s).
There was only once that I encountered a young child who already presented zero caring typical of sociopaths. The rest, no matter how troubled they were, that soft side we call empathy could be accessed.
Rhino poaching and wildlife trafficking as a whole is a heartless, zero compassion business. It is all about money, power, status and greed. From the lowly, hungry poacher enticed by money, to the intermediaries, the crime bosses and the end users. Each one in the link has sold their soul and lost sight of their humanness.
Children on the other hand know what is right and wrong. If taught and given the opportunity they will act kindly and will not harm or injure other living beings.
Several months after participating in a “Save the Rhino” activity for kids little Lori wanted to keep her finger nail clippings. At first her mother was puzzled then remembered that Olivia and Carter from One More Generation had done a similar thing. This little four year old wanted to help, she wants her finger nail clippings to be used instead of the horn of a rhino. (In case you didn’t know, rhino horn is made out of keratin, the same substance as our fingernails.)
Ideas for Kids
This coming year, consider giving the young people in your life a way to express their desire to help.
- Grab some old towels and take them to a wildlife rescue center (or animal shelter)
- Take them to a zoo or sanctuary that provides a safe haven for confiscated or abused wildlife
- Throw a party for fun and learning with our ‘Save the Rhino’ Party Kit for Kids
- Read or view ‘Frank and the Rhino Horn’
- Encourage them to sell lemonade or other item to raise money to make a donation.
